Du 的裁决是美国第九巡回上诉法院首次就 tower dumps 的合宪性做出裁决，但这并不是联邦法官首次权衡此事。密西西比州的一位法官在二月份也得出了相同的结论。几周后，司法部对该裁决提出了上诉。
这些案件中的一个很有可能会一直上诉到最高法院，并且 SCOTUS 将不得不就 tower dumps 做出裁决。 上一次这个问题摆在他们面前时，他们将这个问题踢回了下级法院。
2018 年，最高法院审理了 Carpenter v. United States 一案，在该案中，联邦调查局 (FBI) 使用手机位置数据调查一系列抢劫案。 法院裁定，执法机构在没有搜查令的情况下要求提供手机位置数据时，违反了第四修正案。 但该裁决范围狭窄，法院拒绝就 tower dumps 问题做出裁决。
根据 Spurlock 案件的法庭记录，抓住他的 tower dump 捕获了 1,686 名用户的私人数据。 一位在法庭上就 dump 作证的专家指出，“无线公司用户（他们的手机出现在 tower dump 数据中）没有选择与他们的无线提供商共享他们的位置，而且实际上，他们无法选择不出现在[搜查令]回复中收到的此类记录中。”
